We love taking on new challenges and pushing ourselves to expand our horizons in our clients’ work. Recently, we got the perfect opportunity to do that with the Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina, based in Saudi Arabia.
Jeddah Yacht Club tasked ALTER to design a new website within eight weeks from design, build and go-live, ensuring it was ready for their exhibition at the Monaco Yacht Show.
We needed to be able to deliver a fully responsive website for both desktop and mobile in two languages, English and Arabic; it was an exciting digital challenge to take on.
The main goals of the website design were to reflect the luxury of the five-star Yacht Club and Marina whilst also being the primary contact point for berth reservations, charter bookings, membership and the Jeddah Yacht Club Academy enquiries.
We used plenty of rich video content and large-scale imagery, displayed seamlessly across 14 pages to convey the opulent and luxurious nature of the club and marina; whilst creating a user journey that was easy and consistent across all platforms, whether viewed on a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop.
We needed to adjust the content and design of the website to suit the Arabic Al-abjadiyah alphabet. The challenge we faced was to readjust the page content, such as imagery and text, to adhere to the Arabic language alignment, which is read right to left, whilst still retaining the same design concept as the English language website.
Design and functionality are key factors when designing and building websites; our creative team also had to consider the build with a mobile-first approach. Most users at the Monaco Yacht Show would be accessing the website from their smartphones.
Particular emphasis was placed on creating a simple, easy-to-use, visually engaging, responsive site, resulting in a new layout on the homepage for mobile; to separate designs for the ‘Dine, Shop and Stay’ section dependent on the user’s screen size. With the general trend of mobile phone website traffic increasing, we needed to ensure that the site loaded and became interactive quickly and wasn’t data-heavy.
Behind-the-scenes technical SEO updates were completed alongside on-page SEO to ensure the site is prominent in the organic search engine results. We use Google Lighthouse to audit our pages to improve their performance and quality; at the time of the website launch, the site scored 100% for accessibility, SEO and best practices.
The final result was a visually stunning and highly functional website in Arabic and English, delivered ahead of a tight schedule of just six weeks from start to finish.
ALTER can’t wait to keep developing the website over time with Jeddah Yacht Club, we’re already in talks for stage two.
